The honorary distinctions (1st and 2nd place) that Biomedicine’s biochemical department has received in both international (Murex International - 500 laboratories) and national (ESEAP - 200 laboratories) Quality Assessment Programs came as a confirmation of the high-quality performance of our labs.
The biochemical department is equipped with fully automatic Roche & Siemens systems unique in Greece. Through these systems, we have, for the first time, achieved the automatization of pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic procedures.
The Roche system consists of 2 pre-analytic MPAstdB systems, both having a centrifuge, an unplugging unit, a fractionation unit and a sample management unit with a capacity of managing 600 samples per hour.
Each pre-analytic system is connected to an automatic biochemical system that consists of 2 triple biochemical Modular Analytics PPP analyzers, which can carry out 4800 analyses per hour, an automatic immunologic system consisting of 2 Modular Analytics EE immunologic analyzers with a capacity of 680 analyses per hour and 2 units of ion-selective electrodes (ISE 900) with a capacity of 800 measurements per hour.
The Siemens system consists of 2 pre-analytic systems (TECAN), which can manage 500 samples per hour. Each pre-analytic system is connected to the Advia Lab Cell, as well as to all analytic systems.
The lab equipment is complemented by Roche's Hitachi 917 biochemical analyzers capable of 800 analyses per hour.
Regarding leukoma, lipoprotein and isoenzyme electroforeses, the REP system by Helena Labs and the CZE Paragon Capillary Electrophoresis system by Beckman are being used.
The HbA1C test is carried out with the HPLC method, via Biorad's DIAMAT and VARIANT TM2.
The protein tests (CRP, fibrinogen, IgE, immunoglobin, etc), are carried out via Siemens BN II nephelometer.
The blood and urine osmotic pressure quantitative test is carried out via the Wescor 5500 osmometer, while ionized calcium, trace elements and minerals (lead, aluminum, zinc, etc) quantitative tests are carried out using the atomic absorption method using the VARIANT Spectre AA-300 system.
For measuring aminoacid concentration in blood and urine tests, we use the Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method, on a Agilent/Applied Biosystems system.
As for quantitative tests regarding organic acids, odoriferous carbohydrates, fatty acids, thromboxanes, prostacyclins, steroids and metabolic derivatives of steroids, we use a gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system by Finnigan Trace and a liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system by Agilent/Applied Biosystems.
Abbott’s Architect, Roche’s Elecsys 2010 and Bayer’s Advia Centaur are used for the tumour markers quantitative tests.
Drug and toxicity level monitoring is carried out using Abbott’s Toxical Axsym and Roche’s Hitachi 917 analyzers.
